BBC – Radio 1Xtra, Diplo and Friends: Tchami and Benzi

Mad Decent mastermind and professional genre mixologist, Diplo, has been taking over weekends with his pals on his BBC Radio 1Xtra show ‘Diplo & Friends’ since 2012, featuring newcomers and industry mainstays alike. The two hour radio program has hosted Avicii, RL Grime, Paper Diamond, Tiësto, Foreign Beggars, Boys Noize, and God knows who else. Recently it’s been excellent platform to promote new artists like Lido or Diplo’s own new venture with Skrillex, Jack Ü (official BBC Stream).

The latest edition to this young and star studded radio show is none other than France’s own ‘future’ producer, Tchami. After Tchami finished throwing down a mix that solidifies himself as the industry’s leader in ‘future house’, Benzi was brought in to present Volume 6 of his Girl Trapz series (which can be heard in the second hour).

Tchami’s set is a mix-mash of sounds both new and old, and was bound by no genre as he played tracks from Destructo, Jack Ü, Carnage, Gorgon City, Sam Smith, and of course himself. Despite all the mixed styles, no track feels like an outlier, and everything meshes together with ease. Looking for a deep mix with a bite? Something with serious ‘umpf’ behind those low bass notes? Then study up on the track list below and play the mix above, and always: enjoy!

Tchami Tracklist:

Skrillex and Trollphace Team Up For Explosive

Bass music fans have just been gifted an exceptionally dirty renditions of Yogi’s track, “Burial” from dubstep experts Skrillex and Trollphace. Their conjoined remix is one of three tracks from Yogi’s just-released Burial: The Remixes EP, which also include renditions of “Burial” from Crookers and Moody Good. This Skrillex and Trollphace remix has been surfacing in a number of Skrillex’s live sets and, not to mention, has also become one of the “must have” tracks from Jack U’s two hour Diplo and Friends mix. Thankfully, the wait is finally over and fans can grab a copy of this, as well as the other remixes, on iTunes.

From the use of the track’s original vocals and deep horns mixed with screeching lasers and tear out dubstep sounds, this take  on “Burial” packs an in-your-face punch. Once the track quickly drops from the introduction, it carries both a underdone of island flavor and overtone of killer riddim. While the first drop carries a huge amount of attitude, it’s really the second drop that sets this rendition over the edge. Although one can hear sounds that are very reminiscent of Skrillex’s track “Scary Bolly Dub”,  this remix screams, or rather, screeches, quintessential Trollphace. Although Skrillex is the household name out of the two behind this track, fans of Trollphace can easily recognize and rejoice in his overwhelming musical influence within the track.

Check out Skrillex and Trollphace’s remix of “Burial” below, and be sure to check out all the songs from Yogi’s Burial: The Remixes EP here!

Oliver
One of dance music’s fast-rising stars, Oliver Heldens, graced the decks of BBC Radio 1’s Diplo & Friends for a brilliant future house mix. With his latest single, “Last All Night (Koala)” still taking over the radio as well as an unprecedented five Beatport #1 singles to his name, Heldens has accumulated a slew of accolades and doesn’t seem to show any signs of slowing down in 2015.

His hour-long mix for Diplo & Friends highlights some of the best that the future house genre has to offer. Opening with his collaboration with Zeds Dead, “You Know”, Heldens keeps the pressure on the entire mix, barely giving you a second to catch your breath before guiding you back into another groovy house tune. The mix features cuts from up-and-coming producers like JAUZ and Curbi, while also highlighting house veterans like Umek. Heldens drops two surprise IDs in his mix as well, so make sure to keep an eye out for those.

4B
4B has accomplished a lot in his career so far and this Diplo & Friends mix is just another stepping-stone for the talented artists career. Two weeks ago you may have heard of a little festival called Ultra, where 4B had 11 different tracks played out by 9 different artists! With his aggressive trap moombah-sound, this young 22-year-old producer seems to grab a hold of your attention and keep it. The New York native has already gotten looks from Skrillex, Diplo, Dj Snake and many others. His track ‘Bomboclat’ was the first time I had heard of him and I knew after hearing it on BBC Radio 1 I was going to have keep track of future releases. This Jersey club legend has also already released a single on Dim Mak followed by an EP on Mad Decent in late 2014. I think its fair to say 4B has a bright future ahead of him. Look out for more to come by the talented producer and you can also stream and grab a free download of the mix below, enjoy!

Versatile producer Branchez is back at it again. Recently paying Diplo and the BBC Radio 1Xtra studios a visit, the New York City native dropped an impressive Diplo and Friends mix featuring an eclectic roster of artists and tracks.

Breaking in to the scene thanks to his bootleg of Rihanna’s “Stay”, the Skrillex and Diplo backed DJ reached even newer heights with his remix of What So Not’s single “High You Are”. With its release on Skrillex’s popular OWSLA label, the Branchez remix rocketed up the Hype Machine charts to the number 1 spot. 15 million SoundCloud plays later, the remix has become a staple at parties and a favorite among producers and DJs.

In his latest Diplo and Friends set, Branchez seamlessly meshes electronic music and hip-hop beats, percolating with late-night vibes. Featuring a wide spectrum of artists including Wakka Flocka Flame, Kaskade and Kaytradana, this set is ideal for your evening drive or some down time.

invincible

These last few months have been anything but quiet for up and coming artist Marshmello. After a scorching Diplo & Friends mix and a slew of impressive remixes, the still unidentified producer is on to his next project. With upcoming plans to release his instrumental track “INvinCibLe”, the white mystery is offering fans a chance to feature their vocals on it.

The Future Bass instrumental features a simple yet punchy synth layered over a snapping beat to keep a steady pace. Its basic song structure is an open canvas to fans, inviting creativity and originality with their vocals. Marshmello made stems (individual sections of a track) available and left his fans with this encouraging message:

“We’ve been sitting on this track Invincible for a while now and haven’t been able to find the perfect vocal to finish it with. So I figured what better way then to give the #mellogang a chance to take a shot at it and let the rest of the mellogang vote for what they think works the best. I’ve uploaded the track here; download it, record something on it and upload it back here as well as send your demo to joytimerecords@gmail.com . I’ll be listening to everything :).

The winner will be featured on the track and some more hidden surprises. Good luck and have fun!”

In the past, other artists have enlisted fans to send vocal samples. Watch as the highly critical DeadMau5 goes bananas for fan submitted vocals over his instrumental track “The Veldt”.

Get the stems and submit your vocal version of “INvinCibLe” here by August 12th to be considered.

Malaa's Facebook
Every Sunday Diplo is bringing us someone who we’ll be hearing about in the next month or so, and this week he brought the mysterious Malaa to spin a guest mix on Diplo and Friends. Some say Malaa is actually a French trio consisting of DJ Snake, Tchami, and Mercer.  Malaa, whoever it may be, broke out into the spotlight with his “Who is Malaa” mix series a couple months ago. Ever since then, he’s been on the rise and gained more support after releasing remixes of Tchami’s “After Life” and DJ Snake’s “Lean On”. The mix features an eclectic bunch of of hidden gems and remixes like Malaa’s own take on The Weeknd‘s ‘Cant Fee My Face’.   If you’re a fan of some different, groovy deep and tech house, go on and stream Malaa’s new guest mix on Diplo and Friends and let us know what you think.

Louis The Child – It’s Strange (Boombox Cartel Remix)

2015 was a huge year for LA-based Boombox Cartel. The rising duo released music on the two powerhouse labels OWSLA and Mad Decent, toured around Australia, remixed Diplo and collaborated with insanely talented artists like NGHTMRE, Bro Safari and Jackal. As it may look like they accomplished the most, the best part is that they’re just getting started.

To start 2016, Boombox Cartel decided to grab up Louis The Child‘s “It’s Strange” and turn it into a heavy bass-throbbling banger as part of a huge remix pack out today. With the soft and original vocal build-up, the tune leans into a high energized drop that later transforms into a sick trap beat to get a crowd going. On Saturday, January 16th Boombox Cartel is scheduled to mix on Diplo & Friends radio. According to their Facebook post, we should be getting previews of some of their upcoming projects. Expect to hear this new tune a lot at your nearest festival this year, and expect more to come from Boombox Cartel. Check out the track below, enjoy!

Diplo Treats Us With A Two-Hour ‘Old Skool’ Hip-Hop Mix

Diplo

It’s been a minute since Diplo dropped a purely hip-hop mix, but now, the Mad Decent head honcho has delivered two hours of the best “old skool” classics that should surely bring on some nostalgia. Instead of trying to track down some of his famous friends, the superstar decided to premiere the mix during a special solo episode of ‘Diplo & Friends’ on BBC Radio 1.

Diplo gives us a nice blend of all the best in hip-hop from the likes of Notorious B.I.G., 2pac, Nas, J Dilla, The Fugees and many more. It’s also worth noting that he did not forget to add some A Tribe Called Quest after the passing of the legendary Phife Dawg, as he dropped their 1993 single “Electric Relaxation”. For him to be able to bring in so many classics in just two hours shows Diplo’s talent as a DJ as well as his knowledge of hip-hop music. He may be popular right now as a result of his dance music productions, but it was hip-hop, and specifically old school hip-hop, where it all started for Diplo.

Diplo

Besides being the head of Major Lazer, involved in JACK U and founder of Mad Decent perhaps Diplo‘s greatest accolade is his impeccable taste making abilities, blending influences across the musical sprectrum into cohesive mixes and productions that resonate with people of different ages, gender and walks of life. Though he’s mostly known for his contributions to the dance music world which he somewhat laments, he considers Miami Bass, Rap and Hip hop as his roots growing up as a kid in Florida.

As an act of celebration for Radio 1 Xtra’s ongoing “MC Month,” Diplo has decided to take a break away from electronic music and give a tribute to the genre that has influenced him deeply since day 1. Over the next 2-hours, Diplo delivers an all encompassing mix full of must know hip hop cuts, old and new.

Listen to the mix HERE and get ready to turn up.

Diplo And Friends Mix – Drezo And Benzi

Stand-out producer Drezo was the featured guest on the Diplo and Friends mix series this past weekend. He curated a fire mix of the uniquely dark and haunting style of progressive house that has made Drezo one of the most innovative and promising producers currently in the game. He featured many of his own original tracks and remixes in addition to tracks from fellow house producers like Dr. Fresch and Dustycloud. Drezo’s half of the mix will definitely have you bumping the entire time.

The second half of the mix goes to Benzi, a BBC1 Radio resident DJ for Diplo and Friends. He is well-known for his GIRL TRAPZ mix series. He released the twelfth volume of the series last month.

You can listen to Drezo and Benzi’s Diplo and Friends mixes on the BBC Radio 1 site for the rest of the month or on Mixcloud below.

Oshi Premieres New Track With Skrillex & Sober Rob on Diplo and Friends

Oshi and Skrillex

UK artist Oshi, a producer who should be on your radar if he isn’t already, was the featured guest on BBC1 Radio’s Diplo and Friends mix series for July 22. In the mix, he debuted a brand new unreleased collaboration with perhaps the biggest name and taste-maker in the industry, Skrillex, as well as fellow up-and-coming producer Sober Rob. Oshi teased a possible collaboration with Skrillex back in 2016 and that joint effort is finally seeing the light of day.

The cut from the Diplo and Friends mix features a brassy melody and some scintillating synths, which eventually lead to a glitchy breakdown complemented by further brass and string elements. This track features both chaos and beauty all in one. Oshi is known for bucking trends and this track certainly doesn’t neatly fit into one category.

Last year we saw the meteoric rise of teenage phenom Oshi, real name Joshua Brennan. Brennan made huge waves with his redo of Kali Uchi’s Ridin Round,” which now sits at an outstanding 19.6 million plays and garnered the attention of pop superstar Lorde. Since then, he has released a string of both original tracks and remixes, putting his own stamp on the future bass / trap crossover genre. You can check out our 2016 interview with Oshi here.  With this new push from Skrillex, Oshi and Sober Rob are poised to become breakout stars.

Of course the track wouldn’t be what it is without the contributions of Sober Rob, who consistently makes some of the best cross-genre music in the game right now. You can check out his EP Enlighten, released last year, by clicking here. Both producers don’t fit into one specific genre box, and they don’t seem to want to. They are riding the next wave in electronic music where producers just make the music they want without worrying about genres. They last collaborated six months ago on an enchanting track entitled “Lost.”

While the track is not officially released yet, listen to a cut of Oshi x Skrillex x Sober Rob – “Triumph” below:
