Diplo

Besides being the head of Major Lazer, involved in JACK U and founder of Mad Decent perhaps Diplo‘s greatest accolade is his impeccable taste making abilities, blending influences across the musical sprectrum into cohesive mixes and productions that resonate with people of different ages, gender and walks of life. Though he’s mostly known for his contributions to the dance music world which he somewhat laments, he considers Miami Bass, Rap and Hip hop as his roots growing up as a kid in Florida.

As an act of celebration for Radio 1 Xtra’s ongoing “MC Month,” Diplo has decided to take a break away from electronic music and give a tribute to the genre that has influenced him deeply since day 1. Over the next 2-hours, Diplo delivers an all encompassing mix full of must know hip hop cuts, old and new.

The weekly Diplo & Friends radio show on BBC Radio 1 has been a right of passage for up and coming artists. The show has premiered some of the fastest-rising names in dance music today, yet has also highlighted mixes by some of the well established producers as well. The variety and quality of the show has made it a fan favorite. Just recently, the airwaves were blessed with Kayzo as his mix was featured.

Stop and think for a second and you’ll realize that somehow Kayzo is flying under the radar. You recognize the name and you remember enjoying his work, but he’s tough to pinpoint. One listen to this mix and you’ll immediately add him to your must-see list. The mix is lit, savage, grimey, fire AF; choose any of the above to describe this absolutely stellar mix. The LA producer hits us from all angles on this mix. Don’t hesitate to hit play on this stream below as Kayzo cranks it up to eleven with Diplo & Friends.

Diplo And Friends Mix – Drezo And Benzi

Stand-out producer Drezo was the featured guest on the Diplo and Friends mix series this past weekend. He curated a fire mix of the uniquely dark and haunting style of progressive house that has made Drezo one of the most innovative and promising producers currently in the game. He featured many of his own original tracks and remixes in addition to tracks from fellow house producers like Dr. Fresch and Dustycloud. Drezo’s half of the mix will definitely have you bumping the entire time.

The second half of the mix goes to Benzi, a BBC1 Radio resident DJ for Diplo and Friends. He is well-known for his GIRL TRAPZ mix series. He released the twelfth volume of the series last month.

You can listen to Drezo and Benzi’s Diplo and Friends mixes on the BBC Radio 1 site for the rest of the month or on Mixcloud below.

Oshi Premieres New Track With Skrillex & Sober Rob on Diplo and Friends

Oshi and Skrillex

UK artist Oshi, a producer who should be on your radar if he isn’t already, was the featured guest on BBC1 Radio’s Diplo and Friends mix series for July 22. In the mix, he debuted a brand new unreleased collaboration with perhaps the biggest name and taste-maker in the industry, Skrillex, as well as fellow up-and-coming producer Sober Rob. Oshi teased a possible collaboration with Skrillex back in 2016 and that joint effort is finally seeing the light of day.

The cut from the Diplo and Friends mix features a brassy melody and some scintillating synths, which eventually lead to a glitchy breakdown complemented by further brass and string elements. This track features both chaos and beauty all in one. Oshi is known for bucking trends and this track certainly doesn’t neatly fit into one category.

Last year we saw the meteoric rise of teenage phenom Oshi, real name Joshua Brennan. Brennan made huge waves with his redo of Kali Uchi’s Ridin Round,” which now sits at an outstanding 19.6 million plays and garnered the attention of pop superstar Lorde. Since then, he has released a string of both original tracks and remixes, putting his own stamp on the future bass / trap crossover genre. You can check out our 2016 interview with Oshi here.  With this new push from Skrillex, Oshi and Sober Rob are poised to become breakout stars.

Of course the track wouldn’t be what it is without the contributions of Sober Rob, who consistently makes some of the best cross-genre music in the game right now. You can check out his EP Enlighten, released last year, by clicking here. Both producers don’t fit into one specific genre box, and they don’t seem to want to. They are riding the next wave in electronic music where producers just make the music they want without worrying about genres. They last collaborated six months ago on an enchanting track entitled “Lost.”

While the track is not officially released yet, listen to a cut of Oshi x Skrillex x Sober Rob – “Triumph” below:

Thomas Wesley Pentz, better known as Diplo, is one of the most brilliant forces in music today. He’s as much an international brand as he is a musician/DJ/producer. He continues to prove himself to be an incredible cultural figure.

In 2005, Diplo founded his own label, Mad Decent, to showcase the fascinating sounds he encounters while touring the world.

Now, he is expanding his musical knowledge even further. SiriusXM announced that the GRAMMY award winner will launch his own radio channel, Diplo’s Revolution, exclusively on SiriusXM, channel 52. This is nothing new to the producer, as he had another show, ‘Blow Your Head‘, live on SiriusXM, back in 2012.

@siriusxm channel 52….9pm et..march 22 #diplosrevolution

A post shared by diplo (@diplo) on

The channel will launch on Thursday, March 22nd, and will feature global music, hand-selected by Diplo. There will also be a number of original shows, hosted by Dillon FrancisWalshy Fire, and Jillionaire. Diplo’s Revolution will also showcase the biggest songs in global, hip-hop, experimental, and underground dance culture.

Additionally, the channel will also air live festival coverage from the biggest electronic music festivals around the world, including Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, and more. Diplo’s Revolution will also include songs from his solo projects, including Major Lazer, Jack Ü, and further upcoming collaborations.

But wait, it keeps getting better and better. Diplo will also host a weekly music show, ‘Records on Records‘, that will air on Fridays at 7:00pm ET. The show will feature Diplo’s selections from dance music and beyond worldwide. Diplo’s monthly show, ‘Diplo’s Wavelength‘, will based on the cultures and music he discovers while touring the world. This will air on the first Friday of every month.

The channel will launch with a special live performance from the Faena Theater in Miami Beach on Thursday, March 22nd, at 9:00 pm ET. This performance, exclusive for SiriusXM subscribers, will feature DJ sets from Diplo and friends. The show will air live on Diplo’s Revolution.

If you’re a SiriusXM subscriber, you know that channel 52 belongs to Electric Area, which sadly means it is being replaced. Thankfully, its replacement is going to be incredible. I’m stoked for this one.

What So Not – Flying 2 Europe Pt. 2 (Diplo & Friends)

What So Not- Flying to Europe Pt. 2 (Diplo & Friends)

What So Not is having a fantastic March. Debuting his album Not All The Beautiful Things, playing Ultra Music Festival, and now dropping an absolutely beautiful set on BBC Radio show, Diplo & Friends. In Flying To Europe Pt. 2, Chris Emerson plays music from his new album such as the highly anticipated ‘Goh‘ with Skrillex, and ‘Stuck In Orbit‘ along with his classics like ‘High You Are.’ Of course, we get a little bit of Toto’s ‘Africa’ in there, but with a new crossover track on his album featuring the rockstar group, it’s only right.

As Diplo says, What So Not has become “one of the most interesting electronic producers on the planet in the last few years” and we have to agree.

Catch the Sydney producer’s first Diplo & Friends set below and let us know what you think!

Louis The Child – It’s Strange (Boombox Cartel Remix)

2015 was a huge year for LA-based Boombox Cartel. The rising duo released music on the two powerhouse labels OWSLA and Mad Decent, toured around Australia, remixed Diplo and collaborated with insanely talented artists like NGHTMRE, Bro Safari and Jackal. As it may look like they accomplished the most, the best part is that they’re just getting started.

To start 2016, Boombox Cartel decided to grab up Louis The Child‘s “It’s Strange” and turn it into a heavy bass-throbbling banger as part of a huge remix pack out today. With the soft and original vocal build-up, the tune leans into a high energized drop that later transforms into a sick trap beat to get a crowd going. On Saturday, January 16th Boombox Cartel is scheduled to mix on Diplo & Friends radio. According to their Facebook post, we should be getting previews of some of their upcoming projects. Expect to hear this new tune a lot at your nearest festival this year, and expect more to come from Boombox Cartel. Check out the track below, enjoy!

Diplo Treats Us With A Two-Hour ‘Old Skool’ Hip-Hop Mix

Diplo

It’s been a minute since Diplo dropped a purely hip-hop mix, but now, the Mad Decent head honcho has delivered two hours of the best “old skool” classics that should surely bring on some nostalgia. Instead of trying to track down some of his famous friends, the superstar decided to premiere the mix during a special solo episode of ‘Diplo & Friends’ on BBC Radio 1.

Diplo gives us a nice blend of all the best in hip-hop from the likes of Notorious B.I.G., 2pac, Nas, J Dilla, The Fugees and many more. It’s also worth noting that he did not forget to add some A Tribe Called Quest after the passing of the legendary Phife Dawg, as he dropped their 1993 single “Electric Relaxation”. For him to be able to bring in so many classics in just two hours shows Diplo’s talent as a DJ as well as his knowledge of hip-hop music. He may be popular right now as a result of his dance music productions, but it was hip-hop, and specifically old school hip-hop, where it all started for Diplo.

@siriusxm channel 52….9pm et..march 22 #diplosrevolution

[WATCH] Diplo Asked to Take Photo for Group Without Him In It

Most celebrities live a very different life compared to ourselves, dodging crazy fans whenever in public. For some, it’s near impossible to take part in normal activities like grocery shopping or dining without fans begging for a photo or autograph. This past Friday, Diplo had his own unique public experience while in Atlantic City, prior to performing at the Premiere Nightclub.

On Instagram, Diplo posted a video of himself taking a photo of three woman, who appear to not recognize him. To our surprise, and Diplo’s, the three women had no clue who he was and didn’t even ask for a photo with him. Either the woman didn’t know Diplo was in town for the night or were not familiar with the EDM scene. Regardless, the trio will likely be regretting that night for the rest of their lives.

“It’s ok though because I’m an experienced Instagram photographer and I knew the right angles.”

Diplo wrote, “These ladies must have had too much rosé and didn’t recognize how handsome I was because they asked me to take their picture in front of the club I’m headlining tonight.” Being the artist he is, Diplo did as they asked and took several photos for them. Even with the cowboy hat, we’d like to think more people would recognize Diplo, especially as the Friday night headliner. Still, it’s great to see Diplo being able to take part in everyday activities, unnoticed!

Take a look at the hilarious video below.

Epic Games announced that Fortnite now has more than 350 million registered players, growing a breathtaking number of 100 million players since March 2019.

Fortnite is bringing huge doses of entertainment with events like the  Astronomical experience last month, where rapper Travis Scott debuted new music in the game. Earlier this month, Diplo offered a wonderful Major Lazer set.

The musical experience will not be the only special element of the event. In addition to live sets Epic said the event will feature things like aerial obstacle courses at Skydive Rift, boat races at Fishsticks’ Boat Race and new items up for grabs at The Plaza.

Diplo, Sonny Fodera – Turn Back Time

Diplo and Sonny Fodera just partnered up for what may be the song of the year. ‘Turn Back Time‘ is a catchy, deep house track worthy of play at any time of day. Perfect for any season, this will surely brighten your mood and make you dance. We see its release on Higher Ground.

Firstly, the track contains old-school piano riffs, plus a sexy deep bassline. Right from the start, you hear this. Secondly, with lyrics “Turn Back Time” looping on repeat, Sonny’s sound shines through. Believe it or not, the two producers made this song from a late-night session in Los Angeles. Both artists synced up their energies to create this immaculate track.

While Pentz may be facing some social dilemmas, he still gives us music we enjoy. This collaboration is exciting and something we wish we had before. Now, it looks like there is hope for the future.

The Aussie is a masterful mixer in the booth and on decks. Mixmag dubbed Sonny one of the biggest draws in house, and we agree. His performances never disappoint. In fact, his last few shows prior to lockdown brought the house down with his funk. IDs frequent his sets and their ID’s are constantly on the hunt.

As for Diplo, we’ll see where this journey takes him. He’s still a dynamic force in the music industry and a cultural figure. He bridges the gap between the mainstream and the underground. His remixes energize tracks while his performances never let us down. Currently, he is projected to play EDC Portugal 2021 and Mad Cool Festival.

Don’t we wish that we could all turn back time? This has been quite a year, with just a few remaining weeks to go. Don’t fret, we can get through this together.

Listen to their infectious track below!
